BE A TRAVELLER

NOT A TOURST

Discover Alberobello by living in a Trullo.

This picturesque town, nestled in the heart of Puglia, is renowned for its unique trulli houses. The trullo (ancient Greek τροῦλλος trûllos, "dome") is a type of dry stone construction with a conical roof, traditional to central and southern Puglia. These structures find parallels in other parts of the world, such as in Turkey, Harran in Syria, Sarouji, and the Southwest of France in the Village des Bories.

The name Alberobello derives from "Silva alboris belli," meaning "forest of the tree of war," recalling the area's origins, once covered by a dense forest. The history of the trulli of Alberobello dates back to the 14th century, but it was in the 15th century that they experienced their greatest expansion.

To give you a spatial and temporal idea, imagine that in the same years, the Renaissance was flourishing in Florence. Meanwhile, in Alberobello, legend has it that Giangirolamo II Acquaviva d'Aragona ordered the settlers to build houses without mortar, so they could be easily dismantled to avoid taxes imposed by the Kingdom of Naples. The construction technique of the trulli involves the use of local stones, carefully arranged without the use of binders. The stones are placed in such a way as to create thick walls and conical roofs, ensuring stability and thermal insulation. This technique, besides being functional, breathable, and cool in summer, gives the trulli a unique and fascinating appearance. Over the centuries, Alberobello has developed from a small rural settlement to an urban agglomeration, preserving its architectural heritage intact. In 1996, Alberobello and its trulli were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to their architectural uniqueness and historical significance.

Today, Alberobello attracts visitors from all over the world, who stroll through its narrow streets and admire the white trulli with their conical roofs, a testament to a bygone era and extraordinary craftsmanship.

Alberobello's culinary offerings are a true reflection of its cultural and agricultural richness. Whether enjoying a traditional meal in a cozy trattoria or sampling local wines at a vineyard, visitors are treated to an authentic taste of Apulia.

Welcome to this magical and timeless place.
